|
Shortly before noon today, a young woman attempting to cross Route 18 near Penndale Road in Big Beaver, was struck by a southbound mini-van. The woman was critically injured and was taken to a nearby landing zone to be transported by a Stat-Medevac helicopter.

|
Firemen called to a vacant house fire early Sunday morning. The house was in flames when firemen arrived. It took several hours to completely extinguish. The previous tenants had moved out about two weeks ago because of code violations to the property.

An elderly man escapes the fire at his home around 7 am this morning. Firemen tell us the hole second floor was engulfed with flames when they arrived, The house appears to be a total loss. New Castle Fire Department assisted Union Township in fighting the fire. The fire marshal has been called to the scene.

The old train station near Geneva College was destroyed by fire shortly after noon today. Beaver Falls Fire Chief Mark Stowe told KDSTV that the fire is most likely arson.

Route 422 Slippery Rock Township SUV vs Pedestrian
|
A 48 year-old man was struck by a SUV while attempting to cross Route 422 near the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle shop. The man was unresponsive and was being administered CPR by persons at the scene. He was flown by medical helicopter to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh where he is expected to be in critical condition. PSP New Castle is investigating the accident and do not expect to file charges against the driver.

Two cats were dumped at the Lawrence County Humane Society the evening of September 19, 2016. Security cameras caught the SUV traveling through the lot and the cats scrambling to take cover after they were let out.

Two Houses Destroyed in Wampum Fire
|
Two houses in Wampum, one occupied and another vacant, were destroyed by fire around eight o’clock this morning. The occupants, an elderly woman and her son, escaped without injury. Charles Kelly, Jr., Wampum’s Fire Chief, told us the fire marshal was on scene and will be investigating the cause of the fire. Wampum’s fire hydrants, one just across the street from the fire, could not be used as a source for water because the borough’s reservoir is currently being replaced. Kelly said he immediately called for water tankers from a multitude of fire departments and had an adequate supply of water. Residents we talked with were heart-broken over the family’s loss of their home. They feel the town’s residents will pitch-in and help in any way they can.

02/14/2015 Local Sea of Blue March Salutes Police
|
02/14/2015 Nearly a hundred marchers battled the cold temperatures and snow flurries in downtown New Castle on Saturday to honor police officers for their service. The local Sea of Blue event was organized by New Castle resident, Amy Smock. The walk began at Cascade Galaria and ended at the New Castle Police station on North Street with a short ceremony and balloon launch. The video runs approx. 17 minutes.

12/06/14 Ellwood City Honors Fallen Firemen (Preview)
|
A memorial service for two Ellwood City Firemen who died while fighting a hotel fire twenty-five years ago, was held in the downtown area this morning. David "Ernie" Martino and Paul Frederick were honored with a procession from the fire department to the vacant lot which once housed the Elton Hotel. A memorial wreath was laid at the site in their remembrance. A complete video with interviews with the current chief Rick Myers, family members and firemen who fought the deadly blaze will be available later.

Despite the rainy weather and chilly temperatures, the 42nd Annual Wampum Area Christmas Parade provided plenty of excitement and Christmas spirit to all who attended. 07/08/14 Mahoning Twp Business Nearly Destroyed By Fire
|
Police responding to a burglar alarm at SealMaster Manufacturing on W. State Street in Mahoning Township, found the building on fire. Fire departments from Pennsylvania and Ohio fought the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. Fire chief Francis "Poncho" Exposito talks about how the fire was discovered and the difficulties firemen encountered bringing it under control. A complete nine minute video is now available for "emergency personnel".

05/03/14 Richard Hogue Fundraiser
|
05/03/14 A fund raiser was held Saturday in Ellwood City for the family of homicide victim Richard Hogue. Hogue was fatally shot in November of last year at a home on Loop Street in Ellwood City. Friends and family gathered on Lawrence Ave. to celebrate his life and raise money with a motorcycle run to benefit his 7 year-old son, Richard Jr. Approximately 50 riders traveled throughout the county spreading awareness about victims of homicide and what their families must endure. The shooting suspect is awaiting trial in the Lawrence County Jail.

2014 Lawrence Co Habitat For Humanity Douse For A House
|
Today, hundreds of people were on hand for the 4th annual "Douse For A House" at Moraine State Park sponsored by Lawrence County Habitat For Humanity. The youngest participant was 8 years old and the oldest was 79. The air temperature was in the low twenties and the water temperature just a bit below freezing. A large hole had to be cut in the ice to allow access to the water. Many wore colorful costumes and some wore almost nothing. KDSTV’s Joe Sobczak spoke with some of the participants and Habitat For Humantity’s executive director, Shereee Cunningham.

Ex Fire Chief Dan Gallatin Funeral Now On KDSTV.com
|
First time on KDSTV.com / Ex Scott Township fire chief Dan Gallatin was laid to rest during a burial ceremony at Parkside Cemetery on May 11, 2013. Dan was fatally injured in a car / motorcycle accident a few days earlier. A memorial service was held at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Neshannock Township. A procession of private vehicles, fire trucks and motorcycles traveled from the funeral home to Parkside Cemetary.

01/18/2014 The Search For Christopher Sean Story
|
Family and friends are searching for a missing New Castle man. Christopher S. Story, who would have celebrated his 41st birthday on Monday, January 20, has been missing from his home since August of last year. Search dogs from K9-SOS and psychic criminal investigators were also on hand to comb the area where Chris Story was last seen. Unfortunately, the search had negative results. Monday, a balloon
launch was held in front of Chris’s home in honor of his 41st birthday. KDSTV was on hand for the search and Chris’s sister, Lindsey Dover, provided still pictures from the launch.

11/10/13 Woman & Son Recieve Habitat For Humanity Home

11/10/13 A woman and her son were handed the keys to their new home in New Castle today by members of the Lawrence County Habitat For Humanity organization. Amber Norman, who celebrated her 26th birthday today, and her son, Jayden were greeted by nearly fifty guests at the dedication of their home. The crowd went on to sing happy birthday to her after giving mother and son many symbolic gifts for their new home. Chad Weatherby, construction supervisor, presented a unique gift made from a piece of a tree and a part of chain link fence pulled from the property during construction. It now adorns a wall in the Norman home also displaying pictures of Jayden and his mother. 08/16/13 Pastor Randy Crum of Vision Ministries of Lawrence County begins the 1st Annual Salute to the American Soldier Crusade with a motorcycle ride featuring the Patriot Guard Riders at Cascade Park today. Around 150 motorcycles participated in the ride that ended at the Lawrence County Fairground with a patriotic march and a crusade for the American soldier. Crum talks to KDSTV at Cascade Park just before the ride began and said he is excited about the turnout. .

04/28/13 Local VFW Post 315, the National Guard and local softball teams joined forces to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Money was donated in part by sponsors and a check in the amount of five thousand dollars was donated today to the project after a softball tournament at the Taylor Twp. Soft Ball field near West Pittsburgh. The team from Tuscany Square Restaurant in Neshannock took first place in the tournament. Tom Lane, commander of VFW Post 315 in New Castle and head of the event, talks about the importance of the project with KDSTV reporter and videographer, Joe Sobczak.

Local Megabus Passengers Talk About Near Disaster
|
08/28/12 Three local residents escape with their lives after a Megabus traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike nearly crashes. George Allison, Michelle Kolch and her fiancé’, Joseph Allison, were returning to Pittsburgh on Monday from a concert in Philadelphia when the driver of their bus became incoherent and nearly passed out. Several passengers took control of the bus and brought it to a safe stop. No one was injured and after nearly four hours, a replacement driver arrived to finish driving the bus to Pittsburgh. We talked with the local passengers about their ordeal.

08/19/2012 Fire companies from Lawrence County gathered on Sunday, August 19 to participate in the annual "Battle in the Boro" held at the South New Castle Boro fire department on Byers Ave. The event brings local firemen together for a day of fun utilizing their firefighting skills in 6 separate competitive areas. Shenango Township VFD won the overall honors for the second straight year and were able to retain the coveted traveling trophy.

07/21/12 Nearly 100 friends, relatives and fellow firemen gathered to honor recently retired Ellwood City Fire Chief, Connie MacDonald. The event held at Wurtemburg-Perry fire hall, consisted of a sit down buffet and a program hosted by Franklin Township Fire Department’s Sam Ferrante. A short video of recent fires in the area was narrated by MacDonald. Chiefs of several mutual aid companies spoke and gave praise for all his efforts and leadership over the years.

05/29/12 Suspected Meth Labs Found in Lawrence County
|
05/29/12 Two homes in Lawrence County suspected of having meth labs were raided today by local and Allegheny County drug enforcement agents. The first home was located on Balph Avenue in South New Castle Boro and the second on Atlantic Avenue near W. Washington Street in New Castle. Several people were taken into custody and several children were also removed from the homes. KDSTV talks with local authorities concerning the raids.

02/19/12 "Douse For a House" Plunge at Morraine State Park

02/19/12 Lawrence County Habitat for Humanity held its second annual "Douse For a House" Saturday at Morraine State Park. The polar bear plunge style activity raises money for construction of houses for needy families in Lawrence County. According to Sheree Cunningham, executive director of the Lawrence County Habitat For Humanity, 95 plungers raised over $20,000. Many friends and supporters were also in attendance to bring the crowd on hand to over 300 people. KDSTV talked with Sheree Cunningham and many of the participants. 01/17/12 House in Daugherty Township Damaged By High Winds
|
01/17/12 High winds were predicted in the area but really hit home for Daugherty Township resident, Elizabeth "B.J." Green. She was away when she received a call that her home was damaged by high winds. After arriving home, she found her 60 foot porch awning had been blown up on to the roof of her house. Emergency workers arrived to remove the awning and damaged tv antenna. Tarps were also placed on the roof to prevent rain from entering throgh the damaged areas. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

01/01/12 Man Rescued After Dirt Bike Accident in Beaver County
|
01/01/12 A dirt bike accident on private property sends the victim to the hospital. Firemen from West Mayfield were called around three o’clock in the afternoon after another rider notified 911. After locating the individual on a hillside near West Mayfield Park, mutual aid was called to help extricate the victim from the White Township side of the property. Joe DeMuzio, the private property owner, used his ATV to move the victim from the hillside to an awaiting ambulance. Information on his condition was not immediately available.

12/15/11 A public meeting was held this evening by the United States Postal Service concerning the possible closing of the New Castle mail processing center on Cascade Street. About two hundred people attended the meeting held in the Neshannock High School auditorium to hear and voice their opinions on the closing.

08/17/11 Training was conducted today by members of the New Castle State Police Special Emergency Response Team at Shenango High School for local police officers. Bill Phillips, Shenango Township police superintendent, said the exercise was to help local police gain experience in dealing with "An Active Shooter"during a possible standoff at local schools. Lawrence County Department of Public Safety provided their mobile Command Unit as a base for monitoring the activities.

07/12/11 Marine From Grove City Gets Date With Movie Star
|
07/12/11 22 year-old Marine Sgt. Scott Moore from Grove City, PA scores a date with movie star, Mila Kunis. Moore, serving in Musa Qala, Afghanistan, posted a You Tube video asking Kunis to be his date at the Marine Corps Ball in November. Kunis and "Friends With Benefits" co-star, Justin Timberlake, were appearing on a Fox News show when she was informed of the video. After consulting with her publicist, she agreed to be his date at the ball. KDSTV talked with Moore’s parents in Grove City today and they say their phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the Fox Show aired. 06/11/11 SSGT Edward D. Mills, Jr. was laid to rest today at Parkside Cemetery Mausoleum in Shenango Township. Mills was killed in an explosive attack in Afghanistan on May 26. After a 11 o’clock service at the Ed & Don DeCarbo Funeral Home, a procession wound its way through the city and to Shenango Township for burial. 06/08/11 Fallen Soldier Returns Home to New Castle

06/08/11 The body of 29 year-old SSgt Edward D. Mills of Union Township was returned to New Castle after being killed in Afghanistan on May 26. His plane arrived shortly before 9 a.m. this morning at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, Ohio. From there, a procession traveled along Interstates 80 and 376 to the Ed & Don DeCarbo funeral home in New Castle. Mills will be buried at Parkside Cemetery in Shenango Township on Saturday.

04/10/11 Qn.of Heaven Parishioners Worship at Koppel VFD
|
04/10/11 Nearly 100 parishioners attended the 11 a.m. mass of the Queen of Heaven Parish held at the Koppel Volunteer Fire Department. The church was damaged in a fire about a week and a half go after a funeral service earlier in the day. While awaiting assessments from a structural engineer on the integrity of the building and the eventual repair of the church, mass is being held at the Koppel Fire Department. Last Sunday, the first Sunday after the fire, mass was held at Holy Redeemer Parish in Ellwood City. No specific cause of the fire has been released.

03/22/11 Students and faculty rallied today at Slippery Rock University protesting Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett’s plan to cut the amount of funding to the states fourteen colleges and universities. The event which was held outside Old Main on the SRU campus, was echoed by similar rallies throughout the state.

02/14/11 Beaver Falls Fire Dept Conducts Training Exercise
|
Beaver Falls Fire Department conducted a "Control Burn" training evercise last fall in the city. Several buildings were to be torn down but were first made available to the department for training. 12/07/10 Kids were treated to a shopping spree at Wal-Mart courtesy of local law enforcement agencies. Funds were raised by various police departments throughout Lawrence County so that many needy and underprivileged kids can have a Merry Christmas. Children were permitted to select clothing and toys up to a certain total value. This is the 10th annual event that has been hosted by Lawrence County Polices agencies and Wal-Mart every year.

10/24/10 Memorial Bench Dedicated For Crash Victims
|
10/24/10 It was one year ago today that three young friends lost their lives in a tragic auto accident in South Beaver Township, near Darlington, Beaver County. A passenger in another vehicle, twenty-five year-old Jessica DeMarco, was also killed. Today, friends and family of the three friends gathered at the West Mayfield Community Park to dedicate a granite bench in their memory. Louis Young, Bryan Atkinson and Joshua Tate’s pictures and names are inscribed in the bench which over looks the playground and ballfields. A covered bridge and monument built by Joshua’s father, Robert, with support of friends, also stands nearby. A candle light vigil was also held later at the crash site located at the intersection of routes 168 and 51.

09/23/10 Police Canines and Handlers Honored in Ellwood City

Jozek, a five year-old German Shepard canine who is Ellwood City’s police dog, was honored on Thursday at a birthday party in front of the municipal building. The event was held in conjunction with K-9 Appreciation Day in Ellwood City which honors all area police canines and their handlers. KDSTV was on hand to cover the event and a sixteen minute video is now available.

09/17/10 Ellwood City VFD Celebrates 100 Years
|
09/17/10 Ellwood City Volunteer Fire Department celebrated its 100th Anniversary at a banquet at Shakespeare’s Restaurant near Ellwood City on Friday. Over 100 guests ate dinner, listened to speakers who had nothing but praise for the department and were presented the history of the department which covered the last ten decades. Doug Ries of Flip Disc Productions provided the music and magic show. Members of the department had their picture taken with a fire truck outside the restaurant in a way similar to a black and white photo showing the departments first truck with members in 1915.

The 2010 American Diabetes Association’s Pittsburgh Tour de Cure held its annual fundraiser on Sunday, June 27, 2010 at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, PA. Funds raised for this cycling event support the ADA’s mission to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The Tour de Cure is a ride, not a race, with routes designed for everyone from the occasional rider to the experienced cyclist. Steve Shivak, executive director for the Western Pennsylvania American Diabetes Association, said this years event saw a twenty-five percent increase in participants. KDSTV covered part of the event for WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh and you can view the beginning of the 20/30 mile group which began their route around 9:30 a.m. Temperatures in the high eighties and excessive humidity didn’t make it easy on the riders but most finished with a high degee of accomplishment in help fighting this dreaded disease.

The annual book fair held at the Aliquippa Elementary Library was an extra special event this year. The fundraiser, presented by the Aliquippa Elementary PTA, helped raise funds for the B. F. Jones Memorial Library. The library was damaged by flood waters on July 5 and nearly 3000 children's books were damaged or destroyed. Beaver Co. Parent-Teacher Associations are donating proceeds from their "One For Books" funddrive to the B. F. Jones Memorial Library.

An estimated 600 walkers, including nearly 200 students from the Beaver Area School District, walked in memory of the Spencer Morrison Family. Spencer and two of his children were fatally injured in a vehicle crash along Rt. 8 in Richland Twp. last month. Alaina, Garret, and Ethan Morrison were born three months premature at Magee Womens Hospital. The Morrison family is remembering and supporting premature babies and their families by supporting the March of Dimes. Money donated in their memory will help to fund lifesaving research, raise awareness about the growing problem of prematurity and work with families affected by premature birth.
